Thieves have made off with some 22 tons of cheese worth more than £300k from a warehouse in London.

Now I'm no thief nor am I a fence so I struggle to think what these thieves might do with their ill gotten gains. Perhaps a raid on the Branston Pickle factory will be their next hit?

I adore good mature artisan made cheese but I'm thinking there's only so much cheese one can eat so I suspect these cheese chumps might have one heck of a job in shifting this.

Thats a lot of freakin perishables to move if its not figured out in advance. They will probably get caught.

I agree...probably an inside job and they may have access to where product is distributed and who is crooked amongts those buyers.

If they can get it into the EU its probably a lot easier to distribute.

"...which force shoppers to scan their receipts before being allowed to leave. The supermarket believes this will deter thieves".

Lopping off their right hand would deter thieves

No doubt! However in the States, retailers will sometimes see a person lift goods into his (the impersonal "his") overcoat and observe him casually walking out the door. Purposely not trying to deter or apprehend. The "shrinkage" is a cost of doing business, apparently, and it's more trouble and costly to deter than not.

Purposely not trying to deter or apprehend.
My wife runs a chain of stores now, and their policy is do not detain or confront. There was a lady at one of her stores that tried to stop a shoplifter, and got thrown to the floor which caused her some spinal damage, and that cost the company way more than the measly $10 item that was lifted.
They will randomly have LP staff on site that will handle the rough stuff. Some days is clear sailing for the lifters, other days, they get run down by John who throws them to the ground. Feeling lucky?

Also, the cameras get the perps that just walk out, and the cops take it from there. It doesn't make for great videos in the socials, but many shoplifters do get caught. Usually on the resale side.
