Got out a gorgeous pipe and some really good tobacco (Sutliff's Creme Brulee) and packed the bowl way too tight. I spent the first ten minutes trying to suck air through that thing. Finally I had enough. "F**k it," I said, "I am NOT smoking the whole bowl like this!" I tamped out any remaining embers and I laid out a mylar bag. I emptied the whole bowl out onto it and started from the beginning. This second attempt is smoking much nicer!

Yup. You learn the best way to fix it through time. Sometimes it needs to be redpacked, sometimes you just need to run a pipe cleaner through the shank into the bowl for airflow.
Great minds think alike...at the exact same time apparently. Your comment wasn't there when i started posting mine. It might be best to delete my comment to save me from looking like a fool. Is that something I am capable of doing or would I need to try to convince the moderator to do it for me? Lol

When I mess up & overpack a bowl -

I run a pipe cleaner through the stem as far as possible into the bowl, leave the pipe cleaner in place, & slide the pipe tool pick down along a side wall all the way to the bottom of the bowl.

More often than not, this will allow enough air flow to get a cherry smoldering. Some judicious stirring & tamping will keep me happily puffing away.

Never ever happened to me. I test the draw before putting light on my pipe. Don't seem like that's the case with most people. Sounds like torch the tobacco then draw to light it? Beside, there are ways to fix the load/pack without dumping the chamber. Czech tool and pipe cleaner comes very handy.

I often am smoking without access to a pipe cleaner.

But I always have a poker tool and so I will dig down on the stem side of the chamber and see if I can get to the draft hole where I can try to clear it up. then tamp a little bit to even things out.

A lot of times fiddling with it that way does give me success if I have already lit the pipe.
