Well, it's befitting that on the day after I learned of the untimely and unbelievable passing of my first friend and dear brother, Dan Silverstone, from the NY Pipe Club, that I would happen upon and, chance wander (like the walking dead after finding out about his passing) into an antique store just a block away from where we are opening a new branch office, that I find one of his favorite pipe brands, favorite shape, an LB, Shell and to make it even more memorable, incredibly, it happens to be from my own birth year, 1961! Certainly is a sign that Dan is still with me. These things don't just happen to me.

The sticker price said $40.00 but the gentleman took $25! Not bad for an almost near new condition 1961 Dunhill Shell LB.

It desperately needs a good clean up but other than an Everclear soaked pipe cleaner or two, a buff of the stem oxidation and a good buffing of the bowl and shank, this pipe is in like new condition. It even still has the aluminum Dunhill inner tube inserted.

This will be cleaned up and smoked in Dan’s honor and memory.

While I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, I am envious of your antique shop find.

Very sorry for your loss. That pipe is beautiful, and what a great price and great new memory made. I have a few "memory pipes" myself.

Under the circumstances, it feels like Dan and the pipe spirits are with you.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but am happy that you found an excellent pipe to remind you of him.

That pipe is destined to remind you of your friend with every smoke! Excellent find. My birth year Dunhill, a 61 bent shell, was given to me when my father passed. My ex-wife destroyed it along with my other pipes. Still on the hunt for a "replacement".

A perfect memorial. Well done!
I've not seen that level of oxidation up close, and wonder what just a light rub with mineral oil would look like...

I can see Dan's wry smile now, he would have been quite pleased with your good fortune.

A '61 and in great shape, that's a winner!

(I'm going to move this from New Member Intro's to the British section, Dan would have demanded it!)

You who have read the original post know these details and may want to skip down a bit for the "UPDATE".
Finally a worthwhile antique store find, a Dunhill LB Shell from 1961, coincidentally, my birth year before and after photos, amazing refurb by the best in the business.
There's a story...

Certainly is a sign that Dan is still with me. These things don't just happen to me.

UPDATE: I originally intended to do my best clean up job using elbow grease and my home deoxidation remedies when this happened...
After posting this in the forum I received an email from none other than the great George Dibos, master restorer, (have you seen the post about what he did with my damaged 1937 GBD Rhodesian?), who saw my post and how I felt our dear brother Dan guided me to find this pipe and its significance, this never happens to me, BTW, so George, who also knew Dan from various refurb projects, told me to send this pipe to him and he'd take care of the refurb job, as a tribute to Dan, and wanting to be part of the magic of these events! That's another thing that never happens to me! Just unbelievable, and thank you very much, George!
The photos (my photos are terrible but you get the idea) show the after results, simply amazing! It's bowls raised to dear brother, Dan Silverstone, never to be forgotten!

No doubt but that this pipe came to comfort you in the time of your loss. The price makes it an outright gift from beyond the curtain
