How does this work?
Can you still use regular, or do you need high octane 'baccy...?
Thanks.

It's a small insert placed in the bottom of the bowl to allow an introduction of air into the chamber. It's supposed to give a cooler drier smoke. They work.

Most who've tried these, like me, haven't noticed much benefit. Anyone actually feel this improves the smoking experience?

I've always cast a sideways glance at these as gimmicks. Now, an electronic, computer controlled tobacco injected pipe would be the shizzle!

I have two Kaywoodie Carburetor pipes. Both smoke very well. No more so that any other good smoker, no less. Gotta watch as that little outlet can get branding iron hot though!
I wouldn't seek them out nor would I avoid them.

I think they work. What has always struck me as odd is that one of their best features was never really advertised: even burning performance. I have carburetor pipes of all types. I have only ever noticed the Grabow CDLs' carburetor fitments getting hot on me. Someday I will share my secret stash of little known Kaywoodie pre-patent and patent pending Carburetors.
