Most people like gifts, and I do too. But how welcome do you find pipe tobacco as a

gift? I'm of the school that says, definitely, I'd like to try something new, even if it

doesn't work out for me. So far I've been really lucky. Loved the Nightcap, after I aged

it a little. Orlik was my first experience with thoroughly elegant Virginia baccy. Peterson

Whisky and Cup O Joe #5 were just fine. A few freebie samples (are these gifts? I'd say yes)

have not been so great, but I can't remember throwing any of it away. It was at least an

interesting change. On the other hand, I can imagine some real downers. People who really

don't do aromatics (which I like from time to time) might not like a 100 g tin of that.

Cherry and peppermint. I did get a holiday blend that seemed to have as much pine

and cinnamon in it as tobacco, and I finally had to compost that, after "manfully" smoking

quite a bit and trying to improve it by blending it with plainer tobaccos. No more holiday

blends of any kind for me. So ... how about gifts? A blessing or a burden? How's it been for you?

I'm more the adventurous type when it comes to pipe tobaccos. I have my favorites, surely, but I'll try anything. What I do (will) not smoke, I happily cellar for a try later on--or in case of a trade. But with few pipe smoking friends near by, and a family that hates smoking in general, the dilemma doesn't come up too often.
Trust me: nothing would make me happier than opening five packages of tobacco on birthdays/Christmas day. Maybe I need to pass more hints...

I've gotten mixed tobacco gifts some really good(nightcap and other blends that have since entered into my regular rotation) and some horrible (I don't remember what it's called but it seems to be ryo labeled as pipe and thoroughly soaked with hersheys strawberry syrup) Of course, it was a friend who knows what I smoked that got me some of the best tobacco gifts, and my idjit brother in law who also got me a blown glass "pipe" from the headshop he lives next to. So as far as a well thought out gift by somebody who says "Well his tobacco usually smells like burning hair and leather, let's see what other people who smoke hair and leather like." is always welcome. My brother in law who says "he smokes pipes I'll pick him up a pound of tobacco at the headshop" has been advised of pipes and cigars gift certificates in a polite fashion. I think it was something like "Hey I know it's hard to keep track of what all tobaccos I have to try to get me something new and cool so if you want this site has gift certificates and I promise I'll use it to try something new."

I'd certainly welcome a couple of tins as a gift! Of all the tobacco blends I've tried there have only been 2 where I really couldnt finish a smallish sample sized bag. One was Samuel Gawith 1792 which gave me the nic-up's and the other was Erinmore which, to me, had the aroma and taste of vomit!
But, in general, I'd be delighted with a surprise tin on my birthday.

Hehe - although I can't take the credit for the term "nic up". But it does describe 1792 blend very well. I'm sure you could re-roof a house with that stuff and it would withstand the hardest winter!
