Actually, and tobacco I grind up in that thing I always use the dust in the bottom for snuff but maduro cigars are my favorite and bought specifically for snuff.
I ground down a tin of BlackHouse pipe tobacco that was dried out beyond resurrection and turned it into a fantastically smoky snuff that I mix in to commercial blends that need a little "something." It really works well with flavors like Wilson's M.Root and Otto Forest.

Now and then I enjoy Jock's Choice followed immediately with Thor's Hammer.

Nicotine ............the brain loves it
If you smoke only a bowl a week say, and you find yourself looking forward to the Saturday bowl more eagerly as the week goes buy ... Well, figure it out.
There is addiction.
Then there is psychological dependency.

I've mentioned enough times that I only smoke on weekends. And when I have a day off.
I was that person hanging out for my Saturday pipe(s).

Then last years I had a couple of enforced breaks of several weeks each following cataract surgery.
Funny thing, you'd think I'd be hanging out to get back to my pipes.
But it was more like "Do I really feel like a smoke today ?"

Interesting 🤔

I look forward to a pipe each day, why not?

Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

What I trying to say was I would hang out for the weekend to come around so I could get out my pipes.
Then after a few weeks of abstinence it was "don't mind if I do, but if I don't, it's not a problem"

I just find that reset in my attitude interesting

I try and not feel the effects of nicotine. I only get buzzed if I hold smoke in my mouth, or enjoy a very strong blend.

I’m in it for the peace, quiet, and taste.

You have to figure out for yourself how much is too much.

I’m addicted to nicotine in the same way that I’m addicted to sugar. Can I go without it? Yes, but it would suck, at least for a little while.

I have no doubt that people who aren’t daily smokers aren’t addicted in the same way that daily smokers are. I am generally a daily smoker.

I have found that if i use anything to relieve my body or mind of an extremely stressful state and it is temporarily effective, that thing (whatever it is, nicotine, alcohol, eating, tv, etc) becomes cement in my phyc pretty quick as a go to habit. An addiction one might say. Whether harmless or not is up to my discretion.

I guess what I am wondering is this:

How much is too much?

Would you recommend even starting smoking to your younger self? Is it possible to make this purely a casual thing? Once a day? A few times a week or month maybe? I am currently 30 years old.
I've been into pipe smoking for a year and a half, so like you I'm still somewhat new to it.

I don't know how much is too much, but I'm quite certain I'm not there yet. I don't light up everyday, and the days I do it's typically just one bowl. I'm an opportunity outdoor smoker, so I'll light up when time allows, and when the weather isn't miserable. I just enjoy the smell and taste of tobacco, as well as the downtime. I also enjoy the nostalgia of the practice. The nicotine I view as an occasional bonus of pipe smoking. Some blends I don't even notice any nicotine.

Yes I would recommend it to my younger self because tobacco was cheaper then, and I would have a nice stash for less money today! But yeah, for me it is a casual thing and I've gone weeks without a pipe just because it didn't fit in my life one way or another. If all I was really after was nicotine, I'd probably be into some other delivery system than a pipe. If nicotine really is habit forming, I've certainly been immune to it.

I was quite worried of getting addicted when I started smoking something like seven years ago. I was testing my feelings, gettin addicted, was I? Then my level of alertness suddenly dropped as winter arrived. It turned out that smoking in winter wasn't my thing, and never would be. I just couldn't make myself get outdoors and smoke for an hour in -20 C. As I have natural breaks off smoking in winter times, I've never been worried since.
Besides, sometimes even in summer I have a break so long that nicotine hits me like a new substance. It's funny, in a way, but it makes me feel little bit dizzy.

So, as a conclusion, still not really addicted. A tin or two in a year.

Sugar is definitely more problematic for me - whether it is chocolates, crystallised ginger (the latest craving), Krispy Kreme donuts, liquorice jelly beans, biscuits - it really takes an effort for me NOT to have another.

Pipes - 2 bowls (well, 3 today) and I’m done.
