Both are childhood favorites of mine.

The father in the Swedish illustrated children's books about Alfons Åberg.
Daddy Åberg.

Proudly puffing his pipes while doing his best rasing his boy as a single father, with love, compassion and sometimes frustration. Even in the recent books he is still smoking his pipes.

When asked why Daddy Åberg still smoked the author answered "I'm not interested in political correctness - Yuck!"

She also posted the following statement which almost brings Oscar Wilde to mind:
"LONG LIVE DADDY ÅBERGS PIPE!
RATHER A SMOKING DAD
THAN A PERFECT ROLE MODEL!"

I love reading Alfons Åberg to my kids as they gleefully point out "look daddy he's smoking a pipe just like you do!".

I think childrens books and TV where better then than they are now.
