Not sure what area this should be in......just say you are interested in this, and want to try it out. What tobacco would you use and how comfortable would you be smoking it in public

I’d just find a brick and mortar store and buy an ounce or two of something that I liked the smell of and if they had a smoking lounge I’d sit right down and try it out. Oh wait, that’s exactly how I did it. 🤓

Something like Carter Hall or Sir Walter Raleigh would be obvious choices for starting out with pipe smoking. There's a longer list that'll be mentioned by others on this thread.

As for smoking in public, that depends on where you live and what context you are in. Most shops, restaurants, and coffee shops are non-smoking, as are many parks and campuses.

But if you just walk around a residential neighborhood at a distance from other people, you probably won't get bothered. In more remote areas, or in your vehicle by yourself you probably won't get hassled, but don't smoke and drive until you know what you are doing with a pipe, for safety reasons. Just park and smoke.

Avoid any patrolled or regulated areas. Getting reprimanded would not be a good way to start out pipe smoking.

I would start with a mild Cavendish blend like Amphora Original, then graduate to other more robust tobaccos, such as those containing Latakia and Virginia.

As @mso489 said, whether smoking in public is acceptable depends a lot on where you live. Where I live in Southern California, smoking is forbidden in restaurants, hotels, apartment buildings, bars, public buildings, office buildings, stores (except smoking lounges), theaters, parks and beaches, but not on public sidewalks; although there is a city in Southern California, Calabasas, that bans smoking any place indoors or outdoors where others can be exposed to second-hand smoke. You, therefore, should check local ordinances in your area.

Well 1st of all Australia is a **** nanny state
Not too many public spaces one is allowed to smoke in
And smoking indoors in restaurants and bars is totally out

IF I were to smoke in public or around non-smoking friends, I'd most likely choose to smoke an aromatic
Least likely to attract negative comments.
Hopefully an appreciative comment or two, unlikely though this may seem

In the privacy of home, where I do most of my smoking, anything goes 😁

I'd say whatever is available and grabs ones fancy. How public are we talking about too. Out and about sure. In the middle of a huge crowd nah, but more because that would be distracting.

I mean, it really depends. Am I with the kids at a playground? Am I in a city park? At a friend of the wife's wedding? I would feel comfortable smoking a pipe almost anywhere I'd feel comfortable smoking a cigar. As to what I'd smoke, again it depends on the crowd. If it's with cigar smokers, I'm grabbing that stinky smokey English. Campground, woods, cookout type public, a codger burley would be in order. The right aromatic blends in most other situations.

In public in CT smoking is banned. I understand even now you cannot smoke even on the sidewalk if its with 25 feet of a public access door. Very restrictive here. So if I am in an area where smoking is allowed then generally I would smoke anything including cigars, any pipe tobacco. However it also depends on other factors like the place and people. Smoking club....no issue for me, The Owl Shop,, any pipe tobacco, mixed company that likes smoking but not heavy smoke, I would make a judgment call. I would like to be as amicable as possible without curtailing my own enjoyment.

I didn't know that ! I guess I break the law everyday then especially when I park right in front of public access doors if there is a spot. No one ever said anything.  Why does everyone still have cigarrette ashtrays right next to the doors then ??? Are you sure of this ??? I just checked ... Its the Indoor clean air act ... outside is o.k. and I think I found a loophole
.....

The law of Connecticut permits smoking in certain places. These places include ....... where smoking is part of medical or scientific research and testing areas of a business that is engaged in the testing or development of tobacco or tobacco products.[vii] I think we need a new rule at work !!! :ROFLMAO:

you can actually look this stuff up. And there is nothing on the States website that says smoking is banned in public. All I can assume is it's one of those cases where some key details got left out. Though it's weird how there are laws that exist in rumor only. My favorite is in PA everyone thinks that the law requires a certain amount of breaks and a certain allotment of time for those breaks. Nope they sure as heck don't. But nobody is going to tell their employer that. I've actually had jobs complain about this law which isn't a law at all. Oh and you can kill praying mantises legally. You still suck if you do because they're cool and they kill things that aren't cool... But they're not under special protection.

just realized that it reminds me of the rules for smoking near hospitals in PA. Not sure if it's a law or just hospital policy. But you are told to go really far away from them. Though when I work in our one facility at the hospital the only thing people have said is wow a pipe that's so cool.

I only saw referenecs to laws predating our new cannabis laws that went into effect I think in 2020 or 2021 and which tie tobacco vaping and cannabis together and make smoking of any kind regulated in new ways curtailing where and when it is legal to smoke anything. The 25 to 50 foot law does not provide exception to sidewalks or anything else. Strictly speaking it is entirely distance based relating to entryways, working windows and air vents.
