You won’t wreck the wood, either way you do it is fine! I’ve built a few pipe racks, and they’re really satisfying to make after you finish them and rack up a nice set of pipes.Ok thanks I have some hundred year old barn wood to use and I didn't want to build it wrong and waste the wood
Wait, so you are saying I shouldn't?unless you are slobbering in your pipe and not cleaning it after you smoke.

I am mostly posting this because I am very proud of the rack I made but also, I recommend the 'keyhole' shaped hole that I came up with for accepting every pipe, full bent to straight!
That looks awesome you did a great job I would be proud tooView attachment 22857

If i can ever get the honey-do- list knocked down some and get the crops planted i hope to get started on mine soon i did sneak out to the barn and look thru some of the wood I have in the loft. I have been thinking about your suggestion and i think i will go for about 16 pipe slots. I also saw one that has a glass front door for really nice ones that looking at trying to build alsoOld School, I don't mean to lead you astray, but I think a rack for at least 20 pipes would end up filled. Actually, forty wouldn't be too big, but I don't want to send you into shock. If you have four pipes, a dozen seems like a gracious plenty. Ha-ha.
I personally like to season my pipes with slobber so I fully endorse doing so.Wait, so you are saying I shouldn't?
Quite right. Though if slobbered up pretty well, horizontal isn't so good.Bowl up, bowl down, bowl sideways makes no difference functionally unless you are slobbering in your pipe and not cleaning it after you smoke.
