My friend Dave and forum member (Shaintiques) was out and about at his local antique shops and sending me pics of his latest grabs.

One of his finds I see has me super interested. He offers it to me and I buy without personally seeing it.
The attached photos tell the story. I did have to reclock the stem and ream it, but left a thin bit of cake. Bakelite stem is in fantastic shape.
Late 40's - early 50's I was guessing. It smokes great.

I like it! Why would the pipe color like that? I would think it would be the opposite? Was it done like that intentionally?

Nice meer! Most meers color in the shank first as that is where most of the juices end up resting.

Its a meerschaum pipe. Shanks on these pipes usually color first as it tends to be where moisture and tars from the tobacco collect and seep into the porous surface. It is the desired effect.

Whoever owned this before most likely held it by the stem when smoking not the bowl.
A beauty it is too, I would love a KW Meer at some point.

I use a torch lighter made for cigars to carefully heat the stinger, which in turn softens the adhesive enough to use a pair of pliers to turn it to the desired position.

Interesting coloring pattern: it reminds me of a campfire Marshmallow.
I'm a big fan of the Meers and it seems you got yourself a real gem there.

Thanks guys. The pipe is a survivor. I was surprised at how little the bowl had colored since it had a fair amount of cake and seemed that someone enjoyed it very much.

It's that very cake that kept it from coloring. A Meer doesn't need cake, in fact it would be better to clean it out and keep it clean.

That is something to think about. Maybe now that I cleared it out, it will begin to color.
