I watched a couple of great pipe movies last night.
The Quiet Man (1952) with John Wayne is a must see movie in its own right. I have seen it many times but this is the first time I have really watched it with my "pipe radar" on. Wow there are a lot of pipes in this movie. And not just guys holding them. Pipes are being packed, lit, smoked and pointed with. Pipes are being smoked by everyone. The stars, the bit players and everyone in the background too. Barry Fitzgerald has a straight billiard the whole time, Sean McGlory (my favorite) smokes at least 3 different pipes. One of them is some sort of a large straight bulldog and he also appears to be smoking a Peterson 68 maybe. I saw a meerschaum with an amber stem and they have a clay pipe rack by the fireplace in the public house. Highly recommended for pipes and highly recommended period.
I also watched Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon. I have seen this many times also but never really looked at the pipes this close. Basil for some weird reason only smokes cigs in this one. He has weird hair and is trying to act eccentric. Dr Watson on the other hand puffs away the whole time. He has a straight billiard and also what appears to be a bent Dunhill. And last but not least, Dr Moriarty shows up in this one and he is definitely smoking a Dunhill.
I highly recommend both.

The Quiet Man is not only a movie replete with pipes it also boasts two of the most stunningly intense and erotic screen kisses in movie history.

I can no longer only watch Quiet Man once a year. That's why I had to watch it last weekend but will still watch again in two weeks.

Gotta go with Mr. Blandings Builds His dream House! My all-time favorite movie. Both Grant and Douglas smoke pipes, especially Douglas, from nearly the first scene to the last frame.

Yes. Thanks for posting. Mr Blandings is a family favorite of ours. We have owned the DVD for a long time. We watch it 4-5 times a year minimum. It was a key part of my decision to take up smoking the pipe.

Love The Quite Man. It and The Searchers are my favorite John Wayne movies.
And on a side note Maureen O'Hara was hotter than a three dollar pistol.

The whole idea with Sherlock Holmes smoking a pipe is not as regular as they make it out. He really only mentions it a few times in the books. He was definitely a smoker without a doubt, but the calabash pipe is originally due to an older movie from the 40's in which the actor used some poetic license and grabbed his personal Calabash and it stuck, as sir Arthur Conan Doyle makes no mention of what type of pipe. Just food for thought.

"He looked like any other man. He even smoked a pipe". From "The Stranger" Edward G Robinson has a lit pipe in mouth throughout the entire movie. It's seems to be purposely placed as a defining part of his character.
You can watch the entire movie here: The Stranger -1946

"The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" great smoking movie. Lee Van Cleef smokes a pipe throughout most of this classic.
