I’m about to embark on making a LOTR style churchwarden however I am unsure what wood to use for the stem. I have Briar for the bowel and will be bending and shaping the stem via the glue and press /clamp method. Any experience on what a good stem wood is to use? I’ve sourced out red oak (to match the briar as close as I can) but am worried about it cracking when pressed given how hard it is even cut down to 1/8” slices. I’ve used acrylic in the past but really want that authentic full wood look!

Any feedback is appreciated! Thank you in advance!

I think Vauen uses birch.
