This one just came off the bench. First time ever rusticating. I had some issues with the briar chunking out at the rim and shank edges. I had to shave off about 1/4" from both the top of the bowl and the shank to fix it, but I was able to save it! Pretty happy with the results overall!

Short shank or no shank, but the rustication and patterned stem save it. monk, I don't see it as an author but as a ball, that under-reported shape. I have one made out of Mountain Laurel by the evanescent pipe carver Jerry Perry of Colfax, N.C. But shapes are often in the eye of the beholder. I though my XXL Johs pipe was a brandy for a year, until I came across the invoice and found Mogen Johansen, the carver, called it an apple, so apple it is.

So, originally it was intended to be an author, but I drew it too round on the bottom. So after drilling the chamber, I discovered that I needed to flatten the bottom some to create the author look. Lo and behold I drilled too far to allow that. So I also don't feel its a ball since it is not the same diameter side to side as it is front to back. The shank is also shorter that originally intended due to the chip out during rustication.
So, maybe a better name should be The Author's Left Nut! Lol

Author's Ball??
What ever you decide to call it I think it looks great. Very nice rustication. What tool(s) does one use to rusticate a pipe? :puffy:

I made a tool like the one shown here http://pipedia.org/wiki/Rustication

I'm very happy with the results! I added two 1 inch pieces to each side of the T fitting to give my hand a better grip.
Walt Cannoy uses a cheaper setup with the nails epoxied into a scrap piece of acrylic. Video here:

No way! I didn't anticipate this being done with a hand tool. I was thinking more along the lines of a cutter in a Dremel or rotary tool. Very cool. :puffy:

Yeah, I was impressed at how nice it came out. Took about 20-30 minutes to rusticate the whole pipe with that tool. I push extremely hard though, so your results may vary.
