Those of you who live in the area probably know the Phoenicia (NY) diner. Best diner I have attended. The bourbon milkshake is outstanding as is most of the food. Avoid the Hollandaise sauce which is poor. If you go on summer weekends expect a long wait unless you get there very early. On route 28, 7am to 5 pm. Open 7 days in summer, Thurs to Sun in winter.

My wife did food writing for Newsday on Long Island for many years, and she wrote quite a bit about diners, but somehow she missed that one, sadly. It sounds right up her avenue. We're grounded as travelers right now, but we'll definitely keep it in mind. She even did a short-order cooking gig for a week at a diner and learned a lot. When the paper had travel money they sent her as far as Texas, California, and Japan (to write about the fish market and the seafood industry).
