Saw this article in the paper The Guardian (UK) and thought I would post it here. I realise it's about cigarettes and not pipe tobacco but it was interesting to see how big tobacco are trying to position themselves. Philip Morris want to become a "healthcare and wellness company", apparently?.

"The chief executive of tobacco business Philip Morris International has called on the UK government to ban cigarettes within a decade, in a move that would outlaw its own Marlboro brand.

Jacek Olczak said the company could “see the world without cigarettes … and actually, the sooner it happens, the better it is for everyone.” Cigarettes should be treated like petrol cars, the sale of which is due to be banned from 2030, he said.

Government action would end the confusion felt by smokers, some of whom still thought the “alternatives are worse than cigarettes”, Olczak told the Sunday Telegraph. “Give them a choice of smoke-free alternatives … with the right regulation and information it can happen 10 years from now in some countries. You can solve the problem once and forever.”

Philip Morris International (PMI) recently said it wanted half its turnover to come from non-smoking products as it morphs into a “healthcare and wellness company” with executive pay tied to its new mission to “unsmoke the world” by phasing out cigarettes.

Nonetheless the company has come under fire from anti-smoking campaigners who accused it of hypocrisy after it launched a £1bn takeover bid for Vectura, a British pharmacy company that makes asthma inhalers.

Campaigners argue tobacco companies are positioning themselves as part of the solution to a smoke-free world, while continuing to aggressively sell and promote lethal cigarettes. Smoking, including secondhand, kills roughly 8 million people a year, according to the World Health Organization.

Tobacco firms have been moving into cigarette alternatives such as vapes and e-cigarettes. PMI is pushing the IQOS, a cigarette device that heats tobacco to deliver nicotine without the smoke and tar that cause diseases including cancer.

It falls in line with the W.H.O.'s end of tobacco use by 2030 goal.

This dovetails neatly with the narrative that accompanied the announcement of the FDA Deeming Regs in 2016, a law that would offer BT a virtual monopoly on vaping by imposing high Deeming fees to knock out the competition. At that time, vaping was seen as offering a much safer alternative since it didn't involve creating cancer causing byproducts generated by burning tobacco. Of course, that became a bit more complex as some people developed severe lung damage due to some of the chemicals used by the vaping industry, which hadn't yet come under a set of standards for formulation.
They must see a future where the level of profit doesn't justify continuing with traditional cigarettes. It's all about profit. It always is.

I have no doubt that PM has another device or something else that will take over the cigarette market. They are not going to just walk away from a billion dollar industry. Hell they ruined Marlboro's around a decade or more ago when they changed the blend to something that resembled horse crap. I had smoked Marlboro's for around 20 or so years ago years and could tell instantly how they ruined the blend. I switched to Camel Blues after trying a variety of different blends. I was shocked at how they ruined it so badly.

I I honestly don't care what they do as my cellar is deep and I don't need them for crap. I feel badly for anyone just in the beginning of building their cellars as it will not be easy. If you are on the fence pick tobacco every time as pipes will always be available and tobacco will be a real pain to get especially flakes which are showing a shortage day after day. The shortage of flakes is something I am not sure why is happening. It has to be that people are just talking about them all the time.

Honestly, they could ban cigarettes in the US right now, today, and it wouldn't hurt them too bad. Not while Asian markets exists! So, reading the writing on the wall, they retool over here and make cigavapes with the same crap in them, charging an arm and a leg along the way. And continue to flood China, Indonesia, Korea, etc with mass produced cigarettes. At least they learned the lessons of Kodak.
