Hey Friends, I recently collected the three versions of Peterson's Pipe of the Year for 2017: an old pipe style, then designated the "large Jap" and re-released this year in a limited smooth edition of 500, and un-numbered rustic and sandblasted versions. This shape is a real favorite of mine. Of the three I own, each has a wonderful personality, though my favorite seems to be the "rustic." The rim of the bowl has a great craggy pattern that really clicks with me. I'm excited to share the following pictures:

I found this description of the 2017 poty:
"This years pipe takes its inspiration from one of the company's earliest shapes, the 'Large Jap' which dates back to 1906. This beautiful design has a canted-egg shaped bowl with short black acrylic fishtail mouthpiece. The bowl itself is finished in a smooth red brown and is complemented with a hallmarked sterling silver band."
An early illustration of the original pipe that the new version take inspiration from (don't know original source):

I've heard various people describe it as a cutty, an egg--and smokingpipes has commented that this shape's draw may have something to do with the rise of the Devil Anse's popularity.

I have to say, these 3 pipes have become a gateway drug of sorts--as I'm now re-consumed with finding both the 2014 Christmas Zulu, and worse, the 2009 "antique collection" Zulu. The b35 shape just gets to me.
But neither come up on the market much, and when they do, I have a real skill for being out-bid or just plain finding out about a sale after-the-fact.

There's a new addition to the trio, now a quartet: Peterson's pipe of the year featuring an amber stem spigot:

You got a beautiful quartet there, Mr. Drydock.

Congratulations with your latest addition.
Peterson's make very good pipes; I've got 10 of them and each a great smoker.

Peterson was smart to re-reinvigorate that shape.
Mark Irwin did a blog entry on the shape earlier this year.

I am so into this shape. This and Peterson's B23 are two of my all time favorite shapes from their old line. And thank goodness for Peterson Pipe Notes. That site is invaluable. I'm like a negative 10 on what I know of Peterson--and researching shapes, production lines of specific shapes etc, is tricky. That site has helped answer questions and solve problems for me. I feel like I'm just barely scratching the surface of shape/history knowledge.

Good-looking set.
I seem to have a soft spot for Pete's 03/303 shape but, I do like the shape of those.

I've been dying to get my hands on the Sandblast version, I REALLY have a thing for that pipe. It's beautiful and I think it's one of my favorite shapes too. Something about it calls to me!

Your mom\\\'s house
I just picked up the smooth, 441/500. Gorgeous pipe. I smoked it for the first time last night, it smoked amazing. I think I now need the 3 piece set. PAD hitting hard.

That's a handsome set. I have two pairings of pipes -- a silken and smooth Stanwell 32 'dog, and a Shannon and Killarney ebony Pete brandy B11. When you find one you like, it's difficult to keep it to just one.
