Hey everybody. My wife surprised me for my birthday with 2 pipes 1 a meerschaum the other a very expensive looking Peterson Sherlock Holmes "Milverton". She was under the impression that the accents were gold. I as well thought it was gold until I checked the hallmarks. The hallmarks indicate sterling silver? But gold in color I'm left a bit confused as to why they would use gold colored silver? Does anybody know more about this metal that can help me In my conundrum. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Any thought given to contacting Peterson for a definitive answer to your question? My experience is, they are usually very prompt in answering questions.
I have, I'm just not sure what they would say. Hey buddy that pipe from 1999 should have been stamped with gold hallmarks send it back and we will fix it? I'm just curious as to what metal it might be and from a gentleman with your knowledge on such things what do you personally think it is if my horrible photography permits.

I tried searching and apparently there was a gold mount version of the Milverton, but couldn’t find much else. I wonder if someone had the silver on yours gold plated? The glare in your photos makes it tough to see clearly. Maybe contact Mark Irwin and ask him?
I will take better photos in day light my florescent bulbs are not sufficient.

The pics aren't great but pure guess is someone had it modified to appear gold for some reason - mine and any other silver around here tarnish up a different color than gold, but don't know enough to say for sure it's not tarnish. The band says Sterling and there are three hallmarks so the original metal on that when it was made by Peterson would have been and I'm sure is silver and don't think they made a mistake - voting for subsequent owner modification. If you like the look of gold, then it's a win either way.

I'll be posting better pics and the notes from my phone call with peterson later on. I don't think it's tarnished I tried giving it a bit of elbow grease and a polishing cloth and it just made it look more shiny no silver poking through so I'm gonna contact them when I get out of work and see what they say.

Thought about that. I have been accused of having gold on my Petersons due to tarnish. And the picture shows "sterling silver". But wasn't sure if OP payed for gold or silver. I prefer Silver. But that me. Nothing shines like sterling silver.
The wife payd for it is a gift so no price can't.

Maybe its 'Gold-Block' ??? If so, it will eventually be all silver. Contact Peterson, they usually respond same day given time difference. Its probably a "rare" pipe ! ;)

Well there goes calling up peterson today. I guess thats what happens when your career is being Santa all year long. I swear ever sense Covid people just order everything online. I delivered a salt and pepper shaker today. No not a fancy set of culinary pieces but the plain old white and black salt and pepper shakers. Like seriously 😆. Got out about 10 minutes ago so the daylight pics will have to wait till tomorrow. What time is it in Dublin😅.

So after some prying I was able to get the price my wife paid for this piece. She paid a total of $380 dollors. My wife is a haggler and the price tag said $440 so she was able to get it for a bit less then they were asking. I have inspected the pipe with a jewelers loop and come to the conclusion that it was gold plated previously. By who and when I have no idea. I have never bought a pipe with a silver cap and band and then proceeded to gold plate the pipe, so the price of the pipe is a mystery to weather she paid to much or not. I would like some advice as to weather she paid to much or got a deal. It is new unsmoked so I know it isn't a cheap pipe by amymeans but even the $380 sound kinda steep. Here are some better pick as well, thank you everyone for the help and awsome links can't read enough of those things lol.20221231_170200.jpg20221231_171247.jpg
