Last year a friend of mine moved to London and as soon as he arrived he took some pictures of amazing pipes from a local B&M and sent to me. It was long time ago and I didn't know that much about pipes back then. I was checking the pictures yesterday again and I realized that there were some Petersons in the basket. Really guys? You simply have Petersons in UK as basket pipes?

And here are some other pictures from the same place:

Perhaps to save their customers some grief, the store went through their Peterson stock and put those in the basket which they felt should have been deemed seconds by the factory. Hmm...but why would they do that rather than send them back attention to Peterson's QC manager you ask? Hmm...perhaps there is no such person?

Are they priced as basket pipes? I can see just dumping some pipes in a basket and making some room for more expensive pipes to be displayed more formally. But, the Rattrays...

Maybe they were in a pipe rack, and they sold the rack, so they had to dump the Petes somewhere.

By all accounts modern Peterson pipes are nothing special (compared to their glory days) so perhaps have been relegated to 'basket pipe' status until such time they get their act back together?
Great pics by the way Javan

Jay.

I think basket pipe may be a term we use for a no name pipe that simply has a "made in ____" stamp. I'm pretty confident this is probably not the first case of a tobacconist using a basket to store pipes.

Ok Warren, just for your benefit...
By all accounts [that I have read] modern Peterson pipes are nothing special...

Jay.

I have around 115 Petersons in my unused stock. From Shamrock to Supreme & spigots - from Standard over Premier to

De Luxe. They are fine pipes bought from about 1985 until today.
I Have about 70 - 75 smoked, bought by myself and they smoke as fine as my few estates made in England/Ireland.

Comoys,Upshalls BBBs Orliks and Charatans. Many Blakemars a few of Mr Huybrechts and a few GBDs
And then about the same number in smoked pipes.

PC has some lower priced Petersons called Doris pipes for well below the standard asking of prices on Petes of $100 USD up. I'd examine basket pipes carefully when offered in person.

FWIW, I bought a splendid Parker out of a basket in Mayfair last December. It was in the Davidoff store.
Where is the above mentioned shop? Nice pix!
