Shopping for Lees on eBay I often look longingly at other brands.

This Pre Republic of Ireland stamped 307 has excellent grain. It’s about the same price as a new one.

Whatizzit, and why is it so special they want $120?

I own a pre republic 307, except mine is a sandblast finish. Can't speak for all of them but mine is a fabulous smoker. It's big enough for a long smoke yet I can still clench it for a reasonable amount of time. The one you're showing seems to be in great shape and it's a smooth finish, which means it probably has very minor pits and fills, if at all. There's no chatter marks on the bit and the rim is nice and clean. I'd buy it over a new one any day.

I bought it for $120.

By 1946-7 Peterson was using first class imported briar.

And since it has a replacement stem I’m paying for a smoker, not a collector’s piece.

Thanks for the advice.

The main attraction is that the pipe can be dated to a particular time frame.

Pre-Republic Petersons carry somewhat of a premium as collectible pipes.

Are they any better…? Not necessarily. Just from a different time.

First class imported briar...? I don't know what Peterson had in reserve prior to the war, but the supply of briar post war took a while to get back to where it was prior to the war. Several years.
