Have I ruined myself?

I've been smoking Pete systems for most of the last year--almost exclusively for the last 7 or 8 months. Now on the rare occasion when I pick up another pipe, a "basket" pipe, Dunhill, Castello, Sav., etc--I miss the feel and draw of the Pete.

So, is this just a stage some folks go through and move back to other brands later? Just wondering? Especially when I think of the tapered chamber of the Pete system--maybe that's just something I now like.

Wonder if you have any experience or thoughts on this?

I have a few "system" pipes. They all smoke well. But, I caution, they are all at least 20 years old and are the cull over many years. I've had great Petes and some that were filler for the waste basket.

A peterson system was one of my first pipes -- I like it still, but no better than other well-drilled pipes.

the plip does offer a more restricted draw than a lot of pipes ,perhaps this is what you have become used to

I like a draw that is not wide open (ie most British pipes). The P-lip is also something that can be missed, if you don't get other standard fishtale bits in your rotation.

if you're used to something you're used to it. No weirder then people that can't get used to the system pipes and how they smoke.

I have a few Peterson system pipes and find that they smoke similar to my non-system pipes. The concept makes sense w/the reservoir, but I don’t find that they are any “dryer”... or at least not to the extent as advertised.

I smoke Peterson pipes mostly. Do have some MM cobs and Bones pipes. I do enjoy way Peterson pipe smokes, and way they are drilled. System pipes do work very well for me, but I dry out the pipes during smoke.

I, too, don't notice a dryer smoke with the Pete system. However, after smoking one of them, I hang them from my homemade pipe rack upside down with the stem removed (stummel? down) and the moister (spittal or is it mostly moisture from the tobacco burning?) runs out onto the cedar shelf below as it awaits it's turn in the pipe smoking rotation the next day. Perhaps letting it dry out is good. I don't know. Every few months I wash them in the kitchen sink and scrub them out with soap and water. A second bowl of Grand Croupier Double Down and loving the flavor (except when I exhale the smoke through my nose--ouch, burns my nasal cavity then!). Is that the burly?

As a confirmed PeteNut I am finding it harder to include my other pipes in my rotation.
When I reach for a pipe Peterson just seems to fit the bill.
I just love the draw and the general overall feel of a Pete in my hand.
My artesian pipe are beginning to feel ignored,

Yes--exactly, Keith! LOL My other pipes are also feeling ignored ))))))
I've gravitated to the XL315 and XL305 as my daily and nightly favorites. Do you find you have a preferred size/kind of Pete?

Any other pipe I would have to run an occasional cleaner through or shake out the moisture during the smoke. I don’t have to do that with the systems. The ones with the chimneys work even better for me.

It's a wonderful size bowl and a beautiful pipe to my way of thinking. A bit heavy for me but I have one in the rotation and do enjoy it a lot. Good for you! Great taste!!

Definitely. No juice in the mouth. That’s the true meaning of the drier smoke. The chimney places the stem’s draw below the draft hole which drops any moisture inside, because the stem’s airway tapers from wide to narrow at the bit.

I could see how smoking systems exclusively might make smoking other pipes seem "off." The draw is a bit more restricted, and there's the P-lip which has a different feel. I've always smoked other pipes along with my systems so I have never gotten that used to it at the expense of other pipes. But really there is plenty enough variety to systems to make them your pipe of choice if you wanted to. If I primarily smoked VAs, or if I liked bent pipes better I could even see myself making that choice. They work well! Especially if they come out with some straight shapes with deeper chambers, which I believe Mark Irwin hinted may eventually happen.

I believe the Grand Coupier is the awesomely-named "All-Sorts" scrap blends from C&D. A lot of their Virginia-Burley blends also contain perique or dark-fired Kentucky. I would suspect that might be the culprit. I got used to retrohaling (exhaling smoke through the nose) cigars before I became a pipesmoker, so I was conditioned on spicy Nicaraguan cigars, and pipe tobacco generally didn't cause much discomfort. If you stick with it, it will become less unpleasant and add to your overall olfactory experience. But if it's too unpleasant right now, maybe try it with milder blends or skip it for a while.
