That'll give me two to dedicate to this blend. One is from a 1985 Slow Smoke Contest in Italy....it was the first place prize and is unsmoked.

BG definitely shines in a dedicated pipe. My Weaver volcano was commissioned just for the Frigate, and for the four years since it was made, BF has made that pipe its own.

That was the pipe that got me hooked on Bruce's work. The bottom is smooth with plateau.

I love a little plateau mixed into a smooth pipe. I believe Weaver was one of the carvers that inspired me when I carved this pipe. Sorry for the insanely ginormous size of the photo.

I'm a Burley guy and not crazy about Latakia to boot, but I'm tempted to try this one. Good reviews for sure, both here and TR.com.

"The Latakia's far in the background. You may enjoy it."
CE, unfortunately whenever I see Latakia mentioned in a blend I am reminded of my not so pleasant experiences with Nightcap, Early Morning Pipe and Squadron Leader.
They were all tipped into a jar and mixed up with other not so pleasing blends. I do occasionally pop the jar for a quick whiff and am trying to build up the courage to load a (small) bowl just to see how I feel about Latakia after 8 months of steering clear.
Regards,
Jay.

I'm surprised you would even mention Early Morning Pipe in your Latakia aversion. It's VA and Oriental forward and I don't even think you would know there is Lat in there without seeing it in a description.

Skrap, I actually bought and smoked EMP afore I was aware it contained Latakia, but it was most certainly there for me. That was in my first few months of piping where I knew little and understood less about tobacco blends.
On another tack, a generous forum member has posted me a sample of a blend called 'Spectre' (a creation of Russ Oullette no less) that contains Latakia though allegedly in small proportions. It's actually for the cigar leaf that it contains that is why it is being sent to me as that was the topic of the conversation.
Quite looking forward to it and I know which pipe it will be smoked in...just in case
Regards,
Jay.

crack that baby open and enjoy a bowl!
Alright, I've decided this - I'm up for a few new jobs I would really enjoy and have been interviewing heavily over the past week / next week. Once I land the one - I'll crack open the Black Frigate for my celebratory smoke. Until then, wish me luck fellas. Hopefully I'll be coming aboard soon.

Mawman, it really shows how tastes are affected by personal chemistry and puffing style. I love Squadron Leader and get the latakia in the background with the Orientals forward. That's why I'm willing to take a chance on Black Frigate. Latakia forward blends taste like salt.....not a kosher salt, more like a piss salt without the benefit of being aged in dirty underwear. Don't ask me how I know.

I suppose I'm going to have to try this stuff with my next order. I always thought it was a Lat bomb, but probably just assumed that from the hearty name with "black" in it. I'm always leery of seeing Cavendish as an ingredient, but other than that it sounds pretty good. (Not that Lat bombs are bad, BTW. The first time I cracked a tin of Old Dublin, that burned-out-house-in-a-light-rain smell made me swoon. I've never lost my taste for that stuff!)

Nice pipe Anthony.
Actually if I have one complaint about BF is that I wish there was more latakia in it. It's relatively faint and distant. I just barely pick up hints of it.

@Fitzy- Tuskegee Airman is one of my favorites, but sometimes I wish the Lat was more of a presence. I cheat by smoking it in a pipe that is just absolutely polluted by Lat bombs, and that seems to do the trick.

Aldecaker, I'm going to a burned out house today, I'll bottle the sweet stench and send you some. Lol.
That's actually one of the reasons I think I walked away from Lat-Forward blends. I can smell that if I want anytime I go to work.
