Orange bowl?

I picked up a nice old Brigham estate pipe on EBay. The seller is reputable and deals in pipes primarily. The bowl appears to be over reamed and over sanded. The bottom is orange. It comes off on a pipe cleaner or paper tiwel quite easily. Is this thing safe to smoke? The rest of the pipe is clean and as advertised.

I have a Briarcraft Tuffy I picked up on ebay for $4 and it has an orange bowl. I wiped it out with a wet paper towel and it looks like it's just briar. I'll smoke it once I clean it.

This is how it looked when I received it. I used wet paper towels until they came out clean.

A hot (tap water hot) flush should remove briar dust and some gunk, if any, from the airway and bowl. Wipe the chamber thoroughly with paper towel, fire her up!

Which pipe? The Brigham or the Briarcraft Tuffy?
