Hi friends,

A friend gifted this Dinkelspiel rack to me: it only confuses me.

1) Far too tall, even for my foot-long Churchwarden.

2) She guessed that drawer on bottom is missing, though I find none with drawers online.

3) Holes are less than 1/2 of my mouthpieces’ diameter.

Are the answers simply it’s for Churchwardens of unusual length, and that diameters have expanded in the last 100 years, and that the space underneath is for boxed matches?

Makes no sense as a tobacco pipe holder. We're a nutty bunch, but no one would have 10, matching clay pipes of that length. It must have some other purpose - they are frequently shown on Ebay, and listed as tobacco or spoon holders. I'm not certain either is right.

Without scale or dimensions, I was going to guess a fishing rod holder…looks a lot like one in my garage

I like the wineglass idea, but none found on the interfacebookwebs, as you see here.

Its easy to say it's a pipe holder, but why no pics of it holding pipes?

I agree those slots look too narrow for pipes.
Posted a picture of my Google search results. No idea as to why this was ever sold as a pipe holder – wondering if the fashion of a century ago was as I posited in my posting above.

I'm very curious to see any pipes old or new actually placed in the rack. Nothing I have ever seen pipe wise would fit by looking at the pictures shown. I am thinking more of a display rack for jewelry say necklaces or bracelets? Wish we could ask Mr Dinkelspiel what it was designed to be used for.
Definitely unique...
