No Taste out of my Newish Peterson

What gives?! Had this pipe for a few months, I pack it, smoke it, but the flavor never shines, enough so I’ll discard the tobacco and pack another pipe and it’s beautiful. I’m about to turn it into a door stop I think!

sometimes that seems to happen. Briar is organic. Sometimes it's shines sometimes it doesn't. Also sometimes the breaking in period with a pipe is more extreme in some then others. I've had pipes seem kind of like a dud for the first couple smokes. Why no clue guess it's just the pipe fairies.

I had the same issue with a poker by peterson. I worked on it for a year, no luck. It just sits in the stand now. Never had another pipe before that or after that do the same thing. Very strange.

I got one Pete Donegal rocky from 2000s and never tasted great...Nothing ever impressed me out of that pipe but just keeping it for decoration

Would it be worth sanding back the chamber to bare wood?

especially since there is something inconsistent about the effects of that coating. On my one made the first few bowls harsh on the other nothing to complain about at all.

I think they said they'd dump the Pete and pack a different pipe, and the Pete consistently provides no flavor. I had to re-read the post, because my initial impression was the same as yours.

In my experience Peterson pipes can be a little "hard" at first and take a quite long time to soften, but when they do, they are among the best...

Sorry if that wasn’t clear. I pack my Peterson, have no taste. Dump it and pull from the same tin, pack another pipe and it’s fine. I find it quite bizarre.

You are right! couple years ago I bought a second hand high grade Peterson pipe smoked maybe one or two times it was a natural finish spigot pipe and I could not believe how great tasting pipe it is just out of a box...Higher grade Petes are different level of briar and likely lot older wood....

I'd second the sanding down to bare wood suggestion. You could also try the salt & alcohol soak.
I've got alot of Petes, with only a few slow starters among them.

If I remember correctly, Mark Irwin in the Peterson Book said that high grade Petes are made from Corsican briar and the lower grades from Spanish briar.

second option - door stop if you don't mind hating it every time you see it
lastly - never buy another Peterson
