As the title says. I'm new to this great hobby and I've just smoked my first non-aromatic. Or at least my first tobacco that could be described as, at least partly, 'English'.
To get straight to the point...
Did I enjoy it? Absolutely!
Was it better than an aromatic? My wife asked me this. I can only saw that that's the wrong question. Is Stilton better than a sorbet? Is an espresso better than a milkshake? They are different... A good example of either is perfect in its own way. I think I finally 'get' the importance of a rotation of tobaccos. My current selection of more or less aromatics will be reduced to a few decent ones. I have some very average ones in my jars, so it's time to get ruthless.

So how would I describe my first bowl? It's difficult to explain but it is certainly drier than the aros I have smoked. It is cooler than many of them too. You know that smell you get when you strike two pieces of stone, maybe with a spark too? Well that's what i was reminded of as I smoked, together with some pencil shavings (cedar-y as well as the graphite). There was something mildly peppery there too. To me this was all quite different to the tin note which was a woollen jumper by the bonfire, with a touch of slightly sweet leather in there.
So, are my senses screwed?! Bear in mind that's a one-bowl report. For the record, I smoked this outside in s smallish bowl briar Butz, here was no bite, lovely fine ashes at the end, but it needed several relights.

Tastes and flavors are subjective. There is no "wrong" flavor or taste. Although there are a lot of flavors that are universally described, I may taste something in a blend that others may not and vise-versa. As long as you enjoy the flavors that you are tasting is all that matters.
As far as you first part of the post, I love variety in my tobacco blends. I have blends that I love and smoke frequently, but I love to mix them up. I couldn't image smoking the same blend or type of tobacco day in and day out.

Weevil,
I'm in about the same boat as you are...one thing seems sure, the gents in my family that smoked pipes were nothing if not loyal to a certain brand...then they would change momentarily, say for autumn or winter, then right back to the old trusted whatever..
I will say that one of the cool things about our new hobby IS trying different stuff. That's been a lot of fun so far for me....good luck in your search!

mike68 and Bob - thanks for the feedback. I've now had a few bowls and my initial impressions are still valid. I would urge any beginners out there not be be concerned about trying something non-aromatic. I was a little apprehensive, but after trying Skiff, I am very keen to explore the wider world of flavors out there. I guess that's gonna be a never-ending exploration!
Any suggestions for others guys? I am not interested in 'Vitamin N levels' - I would prefer that they are low.
Also, can someone tell me what differences I would detect between Dunhill's Early Morning and Skiff?
Cheers!
