Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, this passed.

I normally don't cuss on the forums, but what bullshit!
I quote the article:
The new law, part of an emergency budget measure to keep the government running...
Yes, we need these extra emergency taxes to keep the state government running. But while you (retail stores) are collecting the extra taxes, be sure to hang up these offensive anti-smoking posters of black lungs and the such to discourage people from smoking.
What a bunch of double talking, hypocritical, asswipes!

I just checked. NYC does have them and are being sued by the tobacco companies.

I sent the author Clyde Haberman an email, and he responded.
Subject: Thanks for the correct opinion on sin taxation:

Thank you Sir,
I am somewhat gratified that you didn’t however include pipe smoking in your article.

While we pipe smokers are vastly outnumbered by all other factions of smokers/tobacco users, we have the greatest pride.

After all; pipe smoking is a hobby and a sport. Neither can be said of cigarette smoking, or cigar smoking, or even albeit disgusting tobacco chewing. (the latter does have spitting contests, but are not in the realm of attention to detail nor performance.
His Response:

Thanks for this note, Mr. Whitcomb.

My father smoked a pipe. When I was very young, hoping to look more grown up than I was (or ever would be), I tried a pipe myself. Didn't like it. Sorry.

Thanks again, and the best,

Clyde Haberman
