I recently purchased a Tristan Lefebvre rusticated Bent Apple. Tristan is a French carver that offers hand made pipes.
He has been making pipes for 4-5 years, if I am correct.
I have looked at his work over the last few years but never quite clicked on anything as he tended to be specializing in the XL department.
When he began to offer smaller models (G4-5ish), I started paying attention.
Especially considering his rusticated pipes are offered at 90€.
A few weeks back, I saw this Bent Apple with a green Cumberland stem and decided to order it.

15268

I received it yesterday.
The pipe is extremely well made. The boring is spot on and it passes a pipe cleaner.
Tristan mentions on his website that his briar has 'rested' (reposé), i.e., aged.
The stem is hand cut (!!!), extremely well finished and the clenching is extremely comfortable.
It also passes a pipe cleaner which is, combined with the hand cut stem and aged briar, simply impressive.
The rustication pattern is interesting, visually pleasant and does not deform the shape.
I am very happy with it!
I will have my first few pipefuls over the next days and will report my impressions in the near future.
But I suspect it will simply smoke great.

It's a nice looking pipe but you are giving high praise for doing what is required of an artisan pipe maker.

Hi kcghost.
I think you might have read or gone over my post a bit quickly?
'cause I believe you might have missed out on a capital point.
How many artisans or high grade brands would offer a pipe that would:

  • Be handmade;
  • Be made with aged briar;
  • Have a rustication that does not deform the shape;
  • Pass a pipe cleaner; and
  • Be fitted with a hand cut high quality Cumberland stem,
for 90€?

Nobody does that.
No artisan, no high grade brand, be they machine or hand made.
But Tristan does.
That, bud, does deserve not only high praise ; but very high praise.

I have smoked my Tristan pipe.
The quality of the briar is, simply, amazing.
It is well seasoned & aged.
I packed the pipe all the way up (no pre-coat).
It never smoked hot or harsh.
It didn't gurgle.
It's building a nice cake right off the bat.
I didn't even get the typical tongue bite that can come with breaking in a new pipe.
I'm so satisfied with it that I decided to commission him for another.
It will be a 1/8 Rusticated Apple with a Cumberland tapered stem & wood shank inlay.

Highly recommended, ladies & gents!
