I enjoy cigars sporadically and am looking forward to getting my feet wet in the pipe arena. I’ve read packing is the trickiest part, is it anything like packing devil’s lettuce? I’m also curious as to how to go about the smoke. I read on another new member’s thread that it took them 4oz to figure out the pipe smoke. Any tips for a guy who has never owned a pipe or smoked pipe tobacco? I have a 2oz tin of Cornell & Diehl King Cake and a miniature maple meerschaum (try saying that three times fast lol) pipe on the way. Any and all tips and advice is welcomed and appreciated!

Well, it is nothing like smoking a cigar other than the consumption of tobacco. It can take as long as a year to learn how to smoke a pipe. You'll go through phases to see if it helps improve the flavor of the blend. First step in pipe smoking is learning what is the right amount of moisture. Depending on what suits you could do nothing other than open the tin and light it up. You could go to the other extreme and dry it out until tobacco extremely crispy. You probably won't begin to investigate this immediately. Then there is packing the pipe. It is crucial to not over pack the pipe. The majority of guys use the three-step method in loading the pipe. After you load each of the three steps draw on the pipe, You the draw to be progressively firmer but always easy to draw. If at any time the pipe gives you a feeling you are sucking rather than an easy draw on dump out the tobacco start over. Smoke the pipe slowly is important. If the pipe starts to get hot you are smoking it too fast. Good luck!!

Greetings from Kimberley BC; alongside reading about the basics, you may find watching a few youtube videos (so you can see the procedures modelled) on the pipe smoking basics. ymmv

one tip i will offer is to keep a few absorbent pipe cleaners handy while you start smoking to run through your pipe to absorb any gurgling or excessive moisture from you or the burning tobacco.

Welcome from Richmond Virginia.
Bust that Cake up in a bowl using your hands and fingers. Then give a small portion some air drying time in the bowl for an hour or two and jar the rest or put it back in the tin.
Pack loosely till you get the hang of it. Light it, let it go out, tamp it down gently and light it again. This will get you started. Don’t worry you’ll mess it up but you’ll also learn and develop skills as you go. Smoke slow
And if it gets hot slow down some more.
