So, I bought a new pipe today and I decided to clean it with some plain old water and a pipe cleaner and some black water came out that then turned purplish after cleaning it a couple of times. I take it is just carbon coating but just wanted to make sure.

Saint Claude? Edit: Actually realized it may be Jean Claude. Pulled a pipe cleaner and realized it had similar logo to the pipe :D

Also, if the stem is acrylic it may be dust from that cutting as well. A lot of black plastics are blue.
It is acrylic. But the dark stuff seemed to come out of the bowl and it had some coating inside.
Should I clean it some more? Don't have any rum at hand at the moment.

Just give it a good cleaning.

I wish the world would stop with the bowl coatings. Even the "neutral ones" arent neutral. Count on your first pipefull tasting funky. Use cheap but neutral tobacco. You are not likely to enjoy its maden voyage...to me that is a shame. Typically one burn in gets rid of any odd flavors. I may remove it on my next pipe.

It's just the bowl coating that you washed out. Lots of us will remove it before smoking, but it is put in there for people who don't like the taste of a new pipe during the break in process.
They usually have a gum arabic binder that easily dissolves in water.
100% with Cosmic.
There was some concern a few years back (or maybe just someone complaining, I don't quite recall), about the black "paint" in the bowls of a few Peterson pipes. Peterson reiterated that it was just a vegetal based pigment. The only reason I remember this is I thought it was super cool to see the word "vegetal". Yes, I'm easily entertained.

You have to be a little more careful with Petes and water. I have had the stain from the outside come off on my hands while rinsing a new pipe. The warmth from smoking them sets that stain, but it can be disconcerting when you look at all of that red wash off on your hands. That pipe now is one of my favs.

Thank you Btp. I couldn't see his post since I have blocked him.
I think I'll have a bowl and see how it tastes. Cheers!
Edit: Unblocking Cosmic. I am not one to keep hate.

Stem mouthpiece is bent to the left. Don't know if it is intentional or not.
Probably not intentional. But, the fix can lead to more problems. If it doesn't bother you, just smoke it. I have one with a similar flaw that I find seems to stay more level when I have it clenched to my left side.

But, if it bothers you, you can heat the stem with a dry heat, flame or heat gun, and re-clock it to center. Then either just let it cool, or set it with cold water.

The problem with re-clocking the stem is that it can set off oxidation or cause a rough surface that will require you to sand and polish the stem back. Also, if you don't have a delicate touch and eye, you can have issues that require heating, clocking, re-heating, re-clocking over and over.

It is all up to your own tolerance for things like this.

Thank you. I kinda like it. I feel like it improves clenching. This pipe cost me 39€ so not bad quality at all for that price. My Cesare Barontini cost me 110€ and this cheaper pipe is better to clench.

It sounds like a carbon bowl coating frequently used by many factory pipes, takes a few bowls of smoking to cancel odd taste. The stem just needs to be twisted to correct position, be careful not to crank on it to much that could break off the stem tenon.

I have a Peterson like that; with a stem as crooked as a politician. It functions just fine. So I've decided to just leave it that way.
I've learned to love it even though it's imperfect... like me 😜
I have a saying: "our imperfection is the source of our perfection". It certainly gives character.

It is acrylic, how do you twist it?
As for the tobacco itself: the vanilla is not overpowering but noticeable. Very pleasant smoke but it is a little bitter.
