Surprised at the diminutive size of the 1956 Dunhill Group 4 I’d recently obtained — I decided to purchase a similar sized pipe for a comparison.

Attempting to match the ‘56 Dunhill’s dimensions—the choice came down to a Rattray’s Old Gowrie 7 or a Peterson Cara 15–both in sandblast.

I went with the Peterson.

This isn’t a quality comparison. Both pipes smoke surprisingly well. Both have similar open draws. The Dunhill is a bit lighter in weight, but I don’t clench.

I simply felt the Dunhill needed a sibling so it wouldn’t look so out-of-place next to my other billiards. —Not that those are large by today’s standards.

Amazingly good smokes from shirt-pocket-sized pipes. I get an easy 40 minutes from each. Fun to smoke!

Both are lookers. But you know I think Peterson is a wee bit better x)
I don’t know. I’ve only had two bowls through the Dunhill. It’s got a beautiful open draw. Extremely light. It’s grown on me so much that it looks “normal” and my others look oversized.

It inspired me to seek out a pipe of smaller dimensions. Interesting that these were considered medium to large pipes in their day.

I’ve got a mind to purchase another white spot. Just need an excuse! I like it!

Dunhill has burned me too many times to be anything more than a glovebox or work pipe, plus the blast on that Pete is much more attractive.

Vintage and new. Three straight pipes couldn't pass a pipe cleaner. The two bents, one full bent could. That's the reason behind this photo.

That’s some bad luck. The one I have is 65 years old and I love it. What are the odds of owning three duds?

The Pete is a looker. I grabbed it when SP ran 15% off so it was $91. Good little pipe. Had to rid it of that nasty bowl coating. At least this one was clean, bare Briar—not full of stain like my last Pete.
