I am a nonsmoker, but my father, who was a pipe smoker, left me a Dunhill pipe and I have never seen one like it. I'm stuck on trying to guess your profession. My first thought was anesthesiologist. Then I thought of sleep therapist or an undertaker (sorry). Maybe a mattress salesman or a hypnotist.
That's an utterly unique pipe, unexpectedly a Dunhill. That was likely back in the old days when they were expensive but not absolutely over the bank, but luckily, the estate pipe (used) market has risen with the new pipe (White Spot) prices. It's a nice one.

It would be helpful to get a close-up shot of the stampings on the other side of the pipe, but based on the photos of the stampings that you have included the patent stamp appears to be 417574/34 and the number after the "D" in ENGLAND appears to be a 6. If I'm reading all of that correctly, then based on the criteria in John Loring's "The Dunhill Briar Pipe-The Patent Years and After", I think that the pipe dates to 1946.
I believe that the SM stamp is the letter code for the pipe shape, although my internet search didn't turn up any Dunhill shape charts that contained a SM letter code (including on Pipedia and Pipephil), but that's not surprising as this is an unusual shape for a Dunhill (at least I've never seen one before). Love the pipe, very modern!

Thanks. What I thought was a 6 is actually a 0. According to the Loring book that would make this a 1951 pipe. Apparently the fact that the group size (the 4 stamp) is in a circle is what makes the pipe a 1951 rather than a 1950. The pipe is a Bruyere finish based on the A stamp.
The pipe looks well cared for and shouldn't be difficult to clean and return to its former glory. If you search this site I believe that there are recommendations for someone who could do the restoration work for you. In the past I have used Mark Tinsky at American Smoking Pipe Company who has always done a great job.
Euthanasiaist? which seems to be the kind of profession that would depend heavily on euphemisms.
