Picked up this Peterson's Patent? The Hallmark "b" appears to be from 1969? Can not find anything about a reproduction or Patent pipe in 1969. Anyone know if there were other hallmarks used other than what is listed for Peterson's? Do I have a real deal Patent or a reproduction? There is no COM either.

The Sterling mark is a Birmingham assay mark from 1901. From pipephil,
During the "Patent era" (1875-1915) Peterson's pipes hadn't any Country of Manufacture stamped. The "2" after the word "Patent" indicates the second-highest grade offered.

Thanks Dave! I found it now…appreciate the info.
SS…Got it off the Bay. It had an old WDC stem in it so it was mistakenly listed as a "Peterson WDC 2" but you could clearly see it said Patent. I figured it was an outside chance but i put in my max bid and was surprised to win it just over $100 with free shipping. The bowl and silver mount are in excellent shape and have cleaned up nice. I am going to have a new stem made for it and give this 114 year old pipe a go.
It is a large bowl at over 2" tall, 3" long and 1.5" wide

Wow. That's an amazing piece. I'm mystified by the Birmingham hallmark -- I thought the silverwork was done in Dublin, hence Irish date letters. Maybe in this case Peterson bought bands in bulk from England and then applied them to pipes and put the Peterson stamping on them in Dublin. The off-color solder line looks like typical Peterson work to me. Never seen one like that, though.

Hey wadda ya know, here's another Peterson with a Birmingham hallmark. From the seller's description, they're fairly rare. Congrats again on such a great find.
It is a rare example of an Irish Peterson with a Birmingham England hallmark on the silver. That does not mean the pipe was made in England, but that the silver mount was outsourced from there for some reason. I have examined and recorded well over a hundred Patent era Petersons and have seen only three with Birmingham silver.

Given the above, it just keeps getting better. And George is the guy for your stem. He'll make you a copy that almost nobody will recognize isn't original. Good guy, great craftsman and very knowledgeable about what's right. You won't be disappointed.
