Came across these two gems in what was essentially a day-light robbery. The two pipes are very lightly used and what I thought would be a fun little restoration project. I have a general understanding that they are decent-to-good Danish pipes but would love to find out more about them. More specifically (and I know probably it'll probably be very difficult) to get a date or at least a general range on them.

As far as my research goes the pipe on the RIGHT seems to be a Former/Eltang collaboration from the 2000s(?) and the pipe on the LEFT is some kind of Chonowitsch (I'm guessing Emil) from god knows when.

If anyone has any information on the pipes they can share, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

You have mostly answered your own questions. For more on Emil Chonowitsch see,

Chonowitsch, Emil - Pipedia - https://pipedia.org/wiki/Chonowitsch,_Emil

From smokingpipes,

"Former-Eltang is, rather unsurprisingly, a collaboration between two of the biggest names in Danish pipe making, Tom Eltang and Hans 'Former' Nielsen. It also supersedes the old Sara Eltang brand that Tom made (along with assistants at various times), but using Former's shaping machines. Like its predecessor, the Former-Eltang line offers top quality Danish shaping, finishing, and engineering at a very reasonable price. Employing their decades of experience as top artisinal makers, paired with the experience both have with factory-made pipes, they've managed something quite extraordinary: pipes of high end, handmade quality, but at prices commensurate with those one would expect from a factory-made brand."

I would call SP, see what they can tell you.

Thank you for the links but I've come across most of those in my research. However, you did inspire me to double check and it would appear that most of the pipes do in fact simply say former/eltang. Wonder what the "DIEHL" means...

Yeah, should probably shoot smokingpipes an email and see if they have any more information.

There is a Munich pipe shop by the name „Pfeifen Diehl“. I‘ve seen pipes from them with a shop stamp like this:

DIEHL
MÜNCHEN

Maybe it‘s their stamp with „München“ lacking for reasons of space.

Thank you Julius, this is a great lead. I'll see what I can find from emailing them.

Cheers.

You‘re welcome! From what I remember, the font of the letters on your pipe should be quite similar to what I‘ve seen. Contacting them is a good idea, I‘m sure they‘ll answer your question. The shop owner definitely has a passion for pipes and does his own carves sometimes. And I‘ve been told that he has learned carving at the Dunhill factory.

Here‘s a link with the contact info:
