Fascinating read. I have great-grandmothers on both sides of my family who were full blooded Native Americans. Cherokee on my mothers side and either Choctaw or Houmas on my fathers side. That makes me 1/8th on both sides and more Native American than Elizabeth Warren. I'm proud of it but feel it would be disrespectful to try and claim some special privilege.

My daughter's husband is the Chief of the Creek Nation police force, and he tells me it is customary to bring a gift of tobacco when you visit an elder of the tribe. In his position, I imagine he goes through quite a bit of tobacco. So tobacco still plays an important role in Indian customs.

Oh, I'd want to ask around to see what the elder prefers. I'd hate to show up with a pouch of Captain Black if he requires Mac Barens HH blends only.
