How are you applying the rum? Are you spraying it on or just pouring it?
It really depends on what leaf you are casing. Virginias are a thin weak leaf with an tight pore structure making it not very absorbent. Burleys tend to take the sauce a little better.

Heating a Virginia slightly can help the pores open up and take the casing better.

The whole idea of a cavendish was to cook the sauce into the tobacco... even if the sauce is just a mild unflavored sugar water.

I've been thinking of adding rum to a couple of tobaccos just for fun. I was thinking of spreading the tobacco out on a plate and misting the the rum on with one of these:

I was just going put it in a ziploc bag after application and let it soak in the dry it a bit and give it a whirl. Should I press it instead?
I mixed the rum and the sorghum together into a spray bottle and misted and tossed... I didnt apply heat as Cosmic suggested

I'm thinking a quick microwave before application now. This should serve to dry the tobacco a little and heat it. Both of which should lend themselves to absorbing the rum. Hopefully at least.

Smoke report: I let it dry for 30 mins rubbed out. Lit well, few relights. Burned down to a white ash. Some gurgles. Tastes like a Virginia blend, you have to smoke slow to avoid bitey town. Not much sweetness discernible, no hint of the rum. It’s cold out so probably not the best test conditions. I’ll cellar till summer and will check it again. It’s tasty though . Satisfies a savory palate
