Been working this hunk of briar for quite some time now since recieving the pre-drilled blank. It's been a joy to work with. I was initially wanting to make a square bowl, but one corner of the blank sort of forced me into going another direction, so I made it octagonal instead. I'm going to keep updating this thread as I proceed. Still have a little more fine sanding to go before I'm ready for the color, but she's getting there.
Here's the blank I started with:

Here's the blank after the initial trimming:

After the initial trimming and some slight shaping/sanding I broke out the pencil, traced out a design around the bowl I wanted and pulled out the Dremel to start removing the briar I wanted to from the panels:

These a few of it after carving the relief areas a little deeper. Just didn't feel quite deep enough after the first round. I also decided that I wanted it to be a sitter, so I took it back to the band saw and cut a nice flat spot along the bottom so she'll easily sit when I want to set her down:

Now, this is where I am today:

I look forward to seeing this beauty all stained up and hopefully pretty soon. I really can't wait to see what it looks like finished.

Good job...looks awesome. Are you going to two tone the stain? If so, what colors are you thinking?
You've inspired me to continue on my pipe kit.

Here's mine:

I am. I plan on doing something two-tone. Looking at a dark brown for the inside and a light brown for the outside. To achieve that, I'll either buy the Cordovan or Tan, or maybe even both and see what I can make happen. Kind of going for that Northern Briars Oriental two-tone look:

That's a nice looking shape! Glad to inspire as these things are really a lot of fun to work on.

Wow, that looks really nice! I love that window-pane carving, should look awesome when it's two-toned. If I ever did a pipe kit, I'd probably smoke it for three years to make sure it was a good smoker, and if it was, likely never get around to carving it! Great looking project.

Thanks fellas, I appreciate it!

Glad you were able to pick up on that, because it's exactly what I was going for. You know, I was very tempted to light it up, but I'm actually doing this one to enter into a pipe carving competition and it has to be unsmoked. It'll be a shame if it doesn't smoke somewhat decently.

And I finished her up tonight with some more fine carving, a little stain and some buffing/polishing. I love the way she looks:

Really enjoyed carving this pipe and can't wait for the next one! Might make some wooden tampers next, who knows.

Turned out great. After you stained it my first impression was...church pulpit. It kind of has that shape and look. Good job!

Thanks Anthony! Yeah, it sure is fun. It's a great way to see how difficult it can be to produce some of these masterpieces we see on the market sometimes. I love how unique it is to work with and just how beautifully it can polish up.

Thanks! I do too, and yes, I was going for a stained glass look on the carving, so that says a lot about it that it's been somewhat easy for others to identify that. It means my ideas were picked up by others without me having to explain, which is great! I loved working on it and can't wait to work on the next one.
