Since I started smoking with filters exclusively, my old Peterson has languished in the ‘decorative’ pipe display.

I took a look at the stem ( I believe it’s vulcanite), but couldn’t tell if it was hollow inside, or what was going on behind the small hole in the bottom.

With nothing to lose, I attempted to drill it out. Slowly and surely I enlarged the hole and stem to accommodate a 9mm filter. The filter seems to fit nice and snuggly.

Don’t know how it will smoke, as I think it’s a system pipe (could be wrong). We will have to see. Would anyone see any potential problems in doing what I’ve done?

Aside from making it a filter smoker I mean (To all you jokers- lol 😂)

No issues. I have a 9mm Pete Pub and obtained a 9mm stem for my Erica XXL hand Made. You didn't change the pipe just the inside of the stem. Stem and pipe work the same. But that said, you may notice the filter get wet as the system pipe condenses into the stummel chamber so a little more condensation that non-system pipe. I only get one use out of a filter in the pub pipe because of this and the fact that it is huge ! I also smoke my Erica 302 and my Irish Second XL339S with the Savinelli dry system stem and a 6mm filter. Same thing.

Please report how this turns out. I tried something very similar with a large, bent Peterson System. The 6 mm Grabow filter fit right in with no mod to the stem. Of course the filter had to be trimmed, almost identical to your picture. Unfortunately the result was a sopping mess. The filter did not play well with the system reservoir.

I believe the Grabow filters are paper so that would happen. The charcoal drip (?) better.

Based on the looks and my similar Petes from that era, I'd say vulcanite. If you smelled toasted rubber during all that drilling, that confirms it.
