Boy is it tiny! I put a few common items in the photo to try to show the scale.

I have some serious cleaning to do, especially the vulcanite stem, oh where to start... There are little symbols on the metal but I don't think it is silver. Anyway, I think I will enjoy this little pipe!

Big fan of the Peterson System 317 shape here ... that's an attractive specimen. I really like the blast on it. Nice catch! :puffy:

What a mess! That nasty little puss collector was gross! Who knows when this was last cleaned?

Looks just like my 317, which I love by the way. Cool little pipe and smokes great. Mine was a total mess and couldn't even pass air through the pipe. Hope you have fun cleaning yours up and enjoying smoking it.

I'm thinking some cotton balls and everclear for this one. Too bad - I really want to try it out. Looks like a have a few hours to spend on the stem anyway...

Orley- looks like your stamp goes from bowl to stem, while mine goes around the band, any idea when each was done?

I think I will take it outside for a test drive.

It is a nice little pipe that is too easy to smoke. I could really taste the flavor more; but that caused me to smoke too fast in my excitement. I will have to work hard to slow it down.

randelli: I got to looking at my 317 and didn't realize that the metal stamping was different. I'll post a couple of pictures so you can see them clearly, and see that my pipe is in much worse condition. I don't necessarily think that makes it the older of the two, but I can't see why the stamping was changed. Maybe someone who knows more about Peterson's than I do can comment. As to what I smoke in it, mostly Virginias of some sort, I recently smoked some GH Rum Flake in it.

It might be tied to when they added the fake hallmarks? I do like the blast on this pipe more than the bumps that come with the modern rusticated pete's

Hey here is a great benefit! The position of the bowl makes it fall right in line with the "reading" section of my progressive lenses. I can actually see when I light and tamp the bowl!

.66" diameter and 1.2" depth. It fits my pinky perfectly - but I have extremely yuge hands :)

I will load it up with GH Dark Flake and see how that goes. L1Q was a little wet at the bottom.

I sooooo want a 317....
I'm a little curious about your comment on the Lane 1Q smoking wet at the bottom of the bowl. On my 307 it starts great, gets a couple of gurgles at mid bowl and then dries out again in the last half.
Do Petes not like Lane 1Q? :crying:

I have a very similar (size and style) basket pipe which works great for flake and twist. The tobacco has to be DRY for this pipe though, otherwise it's like trying to burn damp asbestos. A minimum airing of overnight is needed, but even this isn't always enough. I would give a bit of Dark Flake an extra 12-24 hours drying time and try again.
