My latest attempt at pipe carving. Kind of a pregnant bent billiard. Probably should have taken more off the "cheeks"--the area where the shank and bowl meet-- and rounded the bottom more, but I do all my shaping with files and sandpaper and got tired of filing and sandpapering!! Top of shank has several small pits/flaws. I was going to rusticate that area but changed my mind. The mortise was already counter sunk so I left it that way( the block is one of the pre-drilled pieces I got from the Dr. Grabow factory).Drilling is off,a bit high and off center. The rim ended up with several scratches. Still scratching my head over that. Guess I should resand and stain it.Stain is standard brown Walnut,no contrast stain. The stem came with it. I'd like to make another for it,this one is just a bit to long to my eye. The stand is a piece that I cut off the block with the band saw. It was setting on the bench and I noticed that the contour of the pipe was still close to the scrap piece and decided to shine it up for a stand.

Nice stand ! Great idea. If you dont mind a bit of advice, the biggest change would be to take some more material off the top of the shank where it meets the bowl. A cheap round chainsaw file is the perfect tool to get in that area and clean it up.

The shape of the bowl looks good to me.

Lonestar,I almost did that. As it is there is a flat area above the top of the shank, just below the rim. Weird I know, but I kinda like it so left it that.

Thanks Gents!

jameral, I wanted to sand the area where the pipe sits, but at the rounded part where the bowl sits it is quite thin on one side.To thin to take out the saw marks,so I used the felt.
