I really like the look of Ashton/Northern Briar’s sea urchins, but can’t really justify buying one right now unfortunately. A pre-drilled Molina kit came in the post yesterday morning though, so I thought I’d give it a go on my first pipe project.

I’m a leatherworker part-time too, so made a nice stitched Horween leather table stand to go with it. Having all that leather dye lying around was also most welcome. Colours are saddle tan base, walnut overlay and a mahogany/black dotted spotting bottom to top. Carnauba wax to finish.

All in all, a bit rough and ready compared to the ‘real deal’ I think, but all done with hand tools (bar the dremel holes) and I‘ll be proud using it! No feeling quite like making something for yourself, however it turns out. ?

Damn! Excellent work! Pipe making is a lot of fun and it looks like you’ve got some natural talent! Have you been bitten by the pipe making bug now? I was obsessed with it when I first started smoking a pipe. Unfortunately I don’t have any room to set up shop but I have all my tools in storage and hundreds of blocks o’ briar just “curing” until I can get a shop set up again. It’s a very fun hobby!

Good looking replica of their older urchin design! You up for tackling their new one?

Thanks! I certainly have... got another block on the way. I can sympathise with the space issues - my ‘shop’ is a 10x5 ft room next to our bedroom... all the best in getting set up!!

Looks like you did a fantastic job for a first pipe, mine was not so well, but I stuck with it. 1 down, now more to go, keep em coming.
It’s the satisfaction of having something you made and can use yourself I find. It’s my first pipe but not my first foray into woodwork; you should see some of my first projects there... It’s still not a good idea to put anything round on some of my shelves ? Look forward to seeing your next one too!
