I got this Dunhill for 100$ “buy it now” auction. I could t resist. It’s a 2015 Shell and I think I fixed it up well. I cleaned it and the rest. The only question I have is about the way the stem fits. It’s doesn’t fit quite as perfect as I would expect as far as the shaping, not the actual physical fit. I mean how it looks. It just looks slightly funny to me. Anyway, I could t resist the price. It was dirty but really in good shape and I spend last night and today cleaning it. 79AC90BA-617A-4DBE-9B18-979BAA14EB54.jpegAbove is how it came and then just now after my work.

I’m going to go downstairs and do it but I’m a little embarrassed because I put some clear nail polish on it to get it more snug. Maybe that’s a no-no. 013CF4DC-4C39-45D2-85F4-59D7104DBB0F.jpeg64366712-0437-42FB-8818-7C898F81B2A9.jpegDC5C8F51-F809-482E-9B1E-480A9038FF83.jpegMaybe it’s not a replacement and it fits fine? Hmm…

We had a member get one for $1 at a yard sale, and I found one with the original box, sleeve, and papers for $20. Deals are out there but that one appears to have a replacement stem.

Maybe I’m crazy but it looks slightly funny but maybe this is the way it’s supposed to look.

That’s disappointing. Where did the previous owner likely get it?

You could've just heated the tenon.
Is that less intrusive? I’m afraid I’m going to do worse damage that way. I figure the nail polish can be buffed off. Anyway, I’m more puzzled by the stem. Hmm…how much am I going to let this bother me?

Possibly made the best of two broken pipes.

It's just exploiting vulcanite's shape memory.

I use a lighter though.
Thanks for the video. I’ll check it out. I’m sure I’ll come to find it very helpful. It’d be pretty lucky to have the stem fit this well actually. I mean, it’s very close. Also, I realized this is not 2015, rather, I believe it’s from 1975. Anyway…

Hm.

The shoulder between the tenon and stem face doesn't look like the tenon is a glued-in replacement.

That it is offset side-to-side is strange, though, and so is the way the button extends sideways past (is wider than) the bite zone. That is not how Dunhill made them even in their sloppiest production years.

Now I'm thinking that the stem came from a different pipe, and was partially modified to fit this one in a "close counts" sort of way.

Yep. It doesn't look like it's original to that pipe.

Bottom line, if it smokes well for you, what else matters?

Thanks for your thoughts. Someone really enjoyed this pipe and ai realize now, at least I think, it’s a ‘75. So, the “white dot” means the stem came from another Dun?

I’m kind of slightly OCD. It’s the only thing I’ll be thinking about and looking at as I smoke it. I got it for 100$ and really cleaned it up and shined it. Maybe I can sell it on a Japanese site here. I’m going to give some pipes that I’ve fallen out of love with for my wife to sell on “Mercari.” Even billed as a ‘75 with a replacement stem I think someone will love it. I see what these go for with replacements on Smokingpipes: more than 100$!

I’ve been studying pictures of Dunhill estates. Yes, I see what you mean about the button on the stem. Live and learn!

That is what came to mind when I saw the unrestored picture.
I wanted to believe so I talked myself into thinking it was just not on straight. Well…maybe someone will want it. It was a learning experience. I have a bunch of pipes I want to see so I’ll add this one to the bunch.
