I smoke a churchwarden sometimes (love it actually) and I get moisture buildup as well. Pipe cleaner insertion takes care of it. Not really a huge deal

I feel like an idiot. Also I find that more so near the end of the bowl then at the beginning of a bowl that the more level I keep the bowl as in holding the pipe pretty much straight out keeps it from gurgles but if I tilt it forward it's more likely to gurgle.
I have been having the same issue. I have researched a little bit and have found it may be due to wet tobacco. I have taken my next smoke out of the container to dry for a couple hours (per suggestions). Will see if that helps. Maybe give it a try as well.

As was mentioned drier tobacco and attention to cadence help a lot with any pipe.

I smoke churchwardens fairly often, especially if I’ll be reading. The geometry works well for me. If I get an offensive gurgle a quick pass with a pipe cleaner fixes things.
