Metal Tenon

Yesterday while roaming an Antique Store I found a couple straight Billard Meershaums. I was able o pick them up at a very reasonable price. Once home I cleaned them up a little they didn't new much cause they having been smoked in a while. Now when I pulled the stem off I found a metal tube glued into the shank and the stem slid onto it. Has anyone seen anything like this

Sure, many times. One of my favorite carvers, Scottie Piersel, lines the shank with a steel tube that extends out to form a inverse tenon. The stem twists onto the tenon. Works great.
French carvers sometimes used a steel lining as an enforcement.

Yes, not uncommon on 1960s and early 1970s meers.

I just finished cleaning up a Whitehall estate pipe with a metal tube running the length of it:

Kyriazanos uses this particular construction method quite well, as do other carvers. It's not uncommon.
