Menthol Pipe Smoker

This morning I noticed one of my patrons pull up in his truck smoking a cob.

Me: Whatcha smoking?

H: I'm smoking a pipe. It's pipe tobacco.

Me: I saw that. I smoke a pipe too. What kind of tobacco are you smoking?

H: Just some very cheap stuff.

Me: Captain Black?

H: Cheaper than that. Smokers Pride. I mix black cavendish with menthol.

Yeah, that is cheaper. Big bulk bag for $9 and some menthol pipe tobacco. Gross, but like others have told me numerous times "smoke what you like, and like what you smoke."

Isn't Smoker's Pride a RYO tobacco? The last sort of menthol pipe blend I recall was Greenbrier by Whitehall.

If I were a cigarette smoker and wanted to save a lot of money by not buying tubes or a rolling machine I'd get a cheap cob, some "pipe" tobacco and menthol and smoke. Maybe that's what the guy was doing..

I believe that Smoker's Pride is a Lane product. Here are some reviews on that baccy review site, FWIW.

After further discussion the guy is a former cigarette smoker who used to roll mixture 79 and also inhales his pipe smoke. Told me the Dr. told him he needed to quit smoking so this was his compromise. To each his own.

Smokers Pride is made by Lane. It has both actual pipe tobacco, and RYO varieties.
The Rich Taste, Mellow Taste, and Menthol Taste are RYO.
They have six other varieties that are actual Pipe Tobacco, including a Black Cavendish that some claim is the same as Lane BCA.

I use Halls cough drops to open up my passages and stop a persistent cough, so I don't want to get self-righteous.

Somehow menthol doesn't go with pipe smoking. At all. I have a bag of "generic" tobacco, unflavored, Virginia and

burley, and it's not bad, not harsh, reasonably flavorful, and doesn't have bite.

I've smoked a lot of Smoker's Pride Black Cavendish. I find that it is very similar to Lane BCA, and might actually be one in the same.

I used to smoke it straight years ago. Nowadays I mix it 50/50 with Prince Albert for my "Fat Albert" home blend.

It's really not bad for an ultra-cheap smoke.
