Title edited for specificity.

If you currently serve or have served in the past in any branch of the US Military I would like to personally thank you for your service to our country. May God bless America

Memorial Day is about those that made the ultimate sacrifice in combat. Sorry it’s a pet peeve, there are plenty of days about those that serve and served, this one is for those that never came home.

about a million years ago when i was in 9th grade we took a school field trip from Florida to DC stopping and visiting all of the landmarks. In DC we went to the National cemetery, I’ll never forget this as long as i live, one of the girls was taken aside by a couple of the dress uniform guards and we didn’t see her the rest of the day, it turns out her father was killed in Vietnam 3 days before she was born, she had never been to his grave and she was given an escort to his final resting place. Every year on this day i have a steak, and a good cigar for those that didn’t come home and every year for the past 20 yrs or so i send her a short text on memory of her father, it’s become our thing. For that day on it was ingrained in me what Memorial Day stands for, she never got to meet her father, this day is for the men and women that never came home, never saw their families again and in some cases never met their children.

I come from a long line of military veterans and we ALL served in a combat MOS whether it was in an artillery unit, forward observer, tank destroyer battalion, or infantary and everyone of us served in one war time or another and we were all lucky enough to come back to our families or live to make some. All are gone except me now and I can’t help but think today of all the ones that gave the highest sacrifice. Thank you for the clarification in this thread. Although this country doesn’t do enough for veterans, in my opinion, it is getting better and we do have our day of honor called veterans day. Although there is much Honor in fighting for our country-war sucks. Thank you to all who gave their lives so we could live free today. Miigwetch.

I'm in agreement with your pet peeve but would like to add to it. Mine is that Memorial Day is supposed to honor those who wore a military uniform and died doing their duty. With all due respect, it's not for policemen, firefighters or civilians. The police and firefighters due deserve to be remembered, but Memorial Day should be focused on the military members who have died.
