Meerschaum pipe soot removal

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how to remove soot/burning trace from the rim of the meerschaum pipe.
I was thinking of using a 2000 sand paper, but thinking twice before maintaining this meerschaum.

You can, but it'll come right back. That's from the smoke traveling over the back of the rim from the chamber.

Try a damp rag, it take off quite a bit.

It will on the very edge of the chamber but the rising smoke stains the material.

Yep. You can remove it, but it’ll be back.

If it really bothers you a wipe with a damp cloth after each smoke will keep it at bay but won’t eliminate it.

I like the look. The dirtier the better!

Spit and a paper towel works best if you’re dead set on cleaning it off.

Why? It's part and parcel of smoking meerschaum.

Yes, spit and a dish rag works! There is some scientific evidence why spit works but that's not in my league. However, you may rub off the wax finish. I agree with the others, just leave it.

Merry Christmas everyone. Well out of curiosity I am asking based on your experience, what could be the price of this pipe? I am saying approximately, just for self satisfaction. The pipe is quite big in size (photo below for reference with some things to base on) and made of reale meerschaum block.

$100-$150 depending on brand and if it has a fitted case.

Thank you, I don't know the brand name, and mostly as I am researching lots of these meerschaum pipes are not branded (if I am not wrong).

Sadly, many only include a label on the inside of the case that can be easily lost after only a few years.

The pipe shown in the first post isn't going to be fixed with spit and a rag. May be improved some but it looks like that is mostly the result of poor lighting technique and is severely scorched.

The pattern suggests it's from smoke rising over the bowl when clenching. Prolonged clenching over much use causes that on all of them. The trail of heat and smoke rising up and over the back of the bowl stains the material.

Yeah stickers don't stick to fuzz very well lol.

Sounds like you're trying to fix it up to sell it. If that's the case, once you get it cleaned up, throw it on ebay for $.01 auction and let the community decide. I'm betting it'll go for somewhere between $80-125 with a case and no name. $65-100 w/o a case would probably be a decent prediction. Good luck with it.

Maybe I didn't not express my idea correctly. I just wanted to valuate it due to its big size. Having an idea on what is in hand. I am not selling it. Thank you for the idea though, as if doing a market research based on a request for quotation. Cheers

This may give you an idea. This one is a no name with a hard case. It was purchased new for $270.
