I have a new meerschaum, and after three smokes I see a little gunk on wall of the bowl that an alcohol-dipped pipe cleaner won't remove. Is this okay? Thank you, Sheldon

Welcome to the forums, Sheldon!

There has been some discussion, and opinions vary, but I wouldn't use any alcohol to clean a meerschaum pipe.

I'll search the forums for a picture of one meer whose appearance was ruined by the use of alcohol.
Fred Bass is an expert who disagrees with me on the alcohol issue.

Sheldon, you will get a black residue naturally from the oils of the tobacco. Nothing wrong with that but I wouldn't let it cake. What I do with my meers is wipe them out with a damp paper towel. I agree with cortez, I wouldn't use alcohol or even excess water as that might transport things into the tissue of the meer that you might never get out and could possibly alter the taste of the pipe.
