? I got my 400 years ago. It's fine. I am just tempted by everyone pointing out Marxman ebay listing's at good prices. LolCongrats, let us know when you fix it up. I would have, but I've bought too many pipes recently, plus didn't wanna have to spend more to fix it.

My Cowan has highly figured fill free Algerian briar and it had been smoked two or three times at most.
Look at the color change after the first bowl.

Never waste any money on anything less than Pre 54 Algerian briar.
A screaming bargain is on eBay for a marxman 400 stummel only, no stem.

Marxman Smoking Tobacco Pipe The Foun Hundred | eBay
YOU GET WHAT YOU SEE IN THE PHOTOSwww.ebay.com
I own two, and don’t need three.
Notice how they can turn almost black from use. Originally it was the same shade as the fills.
If you look closely at some of the photos in that ebay listing, you can see some nicks that show the color of the briar underneath, which isn't very dark at all.
From these photos, I have a hypothesis on why you are seeing rapid color change in some of your pipes: it is that the stain that was used is sensitive to heat, and changes color rapidly, and it isn't a factor of the smoke, tar, and sap permeating the algerian briar.
Thoughts?

I own some with bad fills like that one, especially an early fifties “gimmie” pipe contracted for the American Automobile Association that was given free with a membership to X men.
That’s putty. Some of the pipes have putty that darkens with the briar and most that have putty, the putty darkens slower.
No $5 or more Marxman has a drop of stain. They are all virgins.
Were they all oil cured? If so Marx used clear oil. An unsmoked Marxman is always tan.
Not all Marxman pipes suddenly darken , but many do, some while you watch it happen.
Another mystery. Meerschaum pipes darken around the stem first then all over.
If a Marxman darkens quickly it’s usually all over.
Like this $5 Tom Howard Marxman Big Boy knock off. This is the classic oxblood shade they all get in time, some sooner than others.

The Charlie Rich looking pipe seller who at one time sold more CAO pipes than any other retailer on earth, explained it about Meerscahum to the real house queens of the Ozarks,,,,
Your best guarantee of the highest grade and best quality of Meerscahum is the same as your diamond ring. Buy only from trusted sellers and the more you invest the more your husband (son, brother, boyfriend) will receive.
Charlie had pipes on a glass wall with $100 on the bottom to a thousand on top, and the lady usually chose the middle ones.
Well now you've done it! I want one.
Heard good things about the Tom Howard's. You like how they smoke?
I have a few Courtley seconds, you own any of those? Custombilts are a little out of my general price range so they filled the slot nicely.
Why did somebody sell a pipe that nearly new of that quality for $15 and postage?
He weren’t no pipe smoker his own self, for certain.![]()
Nope, I'm amazed at what can be found on there. My Mel-o was 11 bucks shipped.
Wonder if this is the same building at 27 West 24th Street in the Flatiron district. Looks like it could be.

AUGUST 1 is my birthday !
Was excited to get my Deluxe in the mail this morning, only it's the wrong pipe. A Made in France Impostor-Marxman.
Sheesh.View attachment 369713
Does it read Deluxe?
If so, that solves the mystery of the missing Benchmades and Jumbos from that catalog.
The Deluxe pipes were made in France, marketed along with the last Benchmades and Jumbos made in New York.
