I purchased some MB Vanilla loose cut and I noticed that there was quite a large amount of sticky residue at the bottom of my pipe after emptying the ashes out. I have never had this with any other blend and all I really smoke are aromatics. Is this blend known for that or a one off? Smoked in a MM cob by the way.

Not particularly -- I've had some very wet dottle with many other blends (A fresh tin of Dunhill Nightcap just did that to me a few mins. ago).
My guess is to write it off as either "smoked too fast", or the tobacco being a bit on the moist side. I usually air out my tobacco for an hour or so, didn't do it this time...try taking out a bowlful and let it sit for a while before you pack, see if that was it...

Sticky residue....try Villiger 1888 Late Night. I guess the honey in it...left my meerschaum coated in a sticky film. Didn't take away from my enjoyment, but was kind of weird. Didn't matter how dry it was, always left the stuff. Aromatics are funny, I smoke Admiral's Choice Vanilla Cavendish pretty regularly; once every now and then, it will actually leave a sticky film around the top of the bowl. Maybe same thing going here and it just involves the casing. I just remembered, it did it tonight...and it's quite humid. How about there?

Yeah I dry out all my tobacco for about 30 mins before smoking too. And I'm in NYC at the moment so humidity wont be an issue for me anyway

Wet dottle and sticky goop are 2 different things. The former is the result of smoking too fast and/or packing too tight. The latter is the result of the crap they ladle on to create "aros". If you want to taste bourbon, drink bourbon. If you want to taste vanilla, have a bowl of ice cream. If you don't like the taste of natural tobacco, re-think the whole smoking thing.

Didn't see anywhere that he said he doesn't like the taste of natural tobacco.
Some people like having a flavor accented/complimented with something else, it's why we have things called condiments.

Damn, I find myself more and more compelled to defend aromatic smokers, and I don't want to. But, people put steak sauce on steaks, cherries in ice cream, and chives in their baked potatoes. So, there's precedence for mixing flavors, as in disrupting the naturally sweet flavor of a perfectly fine banana in a banana split.

Besides, what else can be done with all of that second rate, bland burleys? :puffy:

I don't like goopy aros like 1Q... but several of the blends I smoke have some sort of light top note... as do MANY tobaccos for that matter.
Telling someone to rethink the smoking thing because they like flavors that compliment their tobacco is silly, and certainly no way to build our ranks. Further... if they want to smoke goopy aros like 1Q... who gives a shite. At least they are buying pipe tobacco and contributing to the hobby.
Sigh indeed, Cosmic.

A little aro is good on occasion. Problem is when you can't taste the tobacco. I like pure tobacco and aromatics....just today I woke up and smoked plug cut burley, later a VaPer, then Vanilla Cream Flake, and just recently two bowls of Nightcap back to back. So, part of my day is at least one aromatic. Though....I will never smoke another cherry blend...can't stand them. The Bold Kentucky I have smoked tastes like BBQ...kind of throwing me off, hoping to lose the thought of it. Might as well be an aromatic. May just save it for a summer cook out lol. Vanilla has been coating the rim of my billiard during these windy days as of late. Tried out the Mac Baren Vanilla Cream Flake and it did so with force. So must be the topping...making a topping. Just wipe it off and go about it. As for the bottom residue...didn't have the problem. Wiped the bowl with a paper towel and went about my business.

I guess I've been doing it wrong all these years. I kinda hate to give it up now but what choice do I have?

Is there consensus that 1-Q is the epitome of gooey tobaccos? Not necessarily coming to the rescue of 1-Q but it seems not much different that many other tobaccos. Besides there is so much of the stuff around that you can't swing a dead cat without running into it! Just needs a bit of drying out before smoking.

He has a very good point. Tobacco is what we are smoking; if you don't like the taste, that's a bigger issue.
I'm most interested in the growth of "semi-aromatics" which have light flavoring to in theory complement the tobacco.
These are a far cry from the goopy soft-drink style flavors on most aros.

If it wasn't for these dreadfully goopy tobaccos that some people appear to have a hate on for we would be smoking lawn clippings and such because all the tobacco companies would long be out of business. The vast majority of tobacco sold is aromatic, this has been covered so many times it's getting annoying. It is a very small percentage that only smoke non-aros, so if you're in that camp you're in the minority. Seriously, if this is such a terrible thing please enlighten us to what other things that we may be doing wrong.

I'm new to the game and have tried two non-aro's. The last one wasn't too bad, neither was the first one before it made me sick...LOL I've tried two aro's and like them. I do plan on picking up some MacBaren Vanilla, and also some 1-Q, the latter reputedly being the largest selling blend in America. It's all good (pardon the cliche).

Thanks for the responses. Yes i smoke english blends and VaPers too, I'm really starting to be able to define that sweet virginia taste as appose to say latakia or periques. But like 1q, i think the topping sweetness only goes to compliment those natural tobacco flavors.

What cracked me up, just have to mention in this thread....Mac Baren Flake has been referred to as smelling like "a nutty turd" smoking it around another. I responded explaining...it's an earthy/nutty smell :D I got a good laugh and rethought the aromatic factor on this one.
