EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9)

Hi all,

I've seen discussions of this to some degree but can't seem to pinpoint them now. How long can you leave large packaged tobaccos (not loose bulk) in their original bag/box? Esoterica seems to do fine in their bags. I have a couple of pounds of MB HH Acadian in their bags, a few 250g boxes of SG flakes, and am getting some 1lb packages of other MB flakes and blends. What's your thoughts on best practice? At the very least, how long can I viably leave them be?

Many thanks,
Eric

I think best practice would be to jar the Gawith and Macbaren.
There has been some discussion about the durability of Esoterica bags so that one is up to you.

Far as the jarring goes, it’s my recommendation to ut about 50-60 grams of tobacco per jar.
That way you can pop a jar to enjoy the tobacco while leaving the rest undisturbed.

If kept in a dark controlled environment, the bagged and boxed tobacco (as is) can theoretically remain viable for a very long time. The downside is you risk losing a lot of moisture, and there will only be minimal aerobic/anaerobic aging.

I have SG St James Flake and GH&C Dark Flake Unscented stored in their original boxes in mylar bags for long term. Once I run out of my rotation, a single bag/box gets opened and jarred for rotation/easy access while the remainder of the bagged boxes sit and wait patiently for me to get to them.

I use actual mylar bags. The ones I use are a little bit thinner than other bags that are available and they're textured so they will work in an ordinary vacuum sealer. I got into the habit of dropping an oxygen absorber into the bags before sealing.

Nothing I do is necessary and probably has zero benefit other than once the oxy absorber has done its thing the bags take up a little less space. I use the thinner bags simply because they will seal in my food sealer but I don't use the vacuum function.

I know other here use thicker bags and a different sealing method.

Once sealed the bags go into a plastic tote to help keep everything in one spot.

Anything not in tins or Mylar bags are not set for the long term. Rule of thumb is, for other packaging, Mylar or jar them. Don’t wait, obviously 1 month will be ok but don’t wait.

My thought at the moment is to use Mylar for securing prepackaged bulk like SG 250g boxes, McB 1lb boxes or bags and Esoterica 8oz bags, all in their original packaging. Once I open a package it would go into jars.

That idea may change and perhaps the food saver bags that I have may be adequate for long term storage since it will be the second layer. What do you think?

This is what I am leaning towards at the moment. What dimension bags work well for you?
